Message From The Director

Greetings! Now that Summer has officially started please take a moment to look through our exciting list of events in this email and see how you can get involved with Rural Vermont and our new Town-by-Town Food Sovereignty Campaign. From educational cheese classes and ice cream socials to Tour de Farms and Farmer to Farmer Workshops, Rural Vermont will be all over the state educating, organizing and doing outreach to support local agriculture and economic justice for farmers.

While these events are fun and a great way to connect with farmers, consumers and local agriculture enthusiasts, they are equally important to building our Town-by-Town Food Sovereignty Campaign. As you may have heard, Rural Vermont is working overtime this summer in an effort to organize communities throughout Vermont to pass local “food sovereignty” resolutions at Town Meeting Day next March.
So what is Food Sovereignty? Food Sovereignty is about embracing the traditions of our rural heritage and growing the vibrant local food system that has existed in Vermont for hundreds of years. Food sovereignty is a rejection of the industry-controlled system of agriculture that has made us largely reliant on corporations whose loyalties are to the shareholders and not local communities. Food Sovereignty is restoring balance to our agricultural system and developing solidarity and unity between farmers and communities. Food Sovereignty is reclaiming our rural heritage and declaring the right of communities to produce, process, sell and purchase local foods.

We have an ambitious goal to pass resolutions in dozens of towns throughout Vermont, however, if we are to be successful in this campaign, we need your help. Please consider being a leader in your community by working with us to bring this message of food sovereignty to your Town Meeting Day. For more information about our Town-by-Town Food Sovereignty Campaign or to become a town leader, give us a call or shoot me an email at jared@ruralvermont.org.

Best,
Jared

p.s. If your farm has been damaged by the recent torrential rains and floods, there’s still time to apply for a Rural Vermont “micro grant“!

SurveyresultsSurvey Results
Thank you to everyone who filled out our survey about the new Action Alert format. Overall, the majority of the results were highly positive; however, we did hear some concerns. We are trying to address them:

  • There was concern that some people would not be able to open the email due to lack of connectivity in Vermont: We understand that not everyone has access to a high speed internet connection, and we apologize to those impacted. Remember that you can always call the Rural Vermont office at 223-7222 to hear about the latest news, issue updates, and events!
  • It was brought to our attention that forwarding the email to other list-serves is difficult with the graphic-based format. Check out the included link to obtain a text version of this email, as well as the “Forward Widely” option at the bottom of the page.
  • Some of the sidebar information has been scaled down and reformatted to make things easier to read.

To voice any further concerns about Rural Vermont’s Action Alerts, please email Robb or call the office at 802-223-7222.
