The weather forecast is looking nice for Sunday, and it’s not too late to register for the Tour de Farms bike ride!! If you can’t get your registration form submitted by Friday (tomorrow), you can register at the event on Sunday. Addison County is home to some of our state’s most beautiful and diversified family farms, and on Sunday September 21st, many of them will be open to the Tour de Farms cyclers! Choose among 10, 25, and 30-mile routes. Then take your time and enjoy the beautifully bucolic landscapes of Shoreham, meet the farmers who are producing some of the finest foods in the state, and – perhaps most exciting of all – sample lots of these amazingly wholesome farm fresh foods, including apples, pesto, cheese, wine, cider, milk, bread and cookies! The Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition, the Addison County Localvores (ACoRN), and Rural Vermont are partnering to host this event. Thanks to all who contributed pickles, jams, chutneys, relish, and sauces for Rural Vermont’s latest fundraiser! All of these preserved foods were used to create the pantry of Raymond and Anne, two of Judevine’s most memorable characters. The items in their stocked pantry will be available for purchase to theater-goers before the show and during intermission, so come out to see the play, get to know Raymond and Anne, and buy some of their goodies to take home from their pantry to yours! All proceeds benefit Rural Vermont and Lost Nation Theater.

Food – a global crisis in the making – TONIGHT
On September 18th, Green Mountain Global Forum, in partnership with the Mad River Valley Localvore Project, will present Professor Fred Magdoff, Professor Emeritus of Plant and Soil Science at the University of Vermont, at The Bundy Center for the Arts in Waitsfield, VT. Magdoff has studied and written about world hunger for many years. He will discuss the compounding factors that are leading to the current realities around food production and distribution. In addition, Magdoff will present potential solutions to both the acute and underlying food security crises. The event is free and open to the public.
Locally sourced refreshments and discussion will follow the presentation.

Vermont Earth Institute’s Fourth Annual Sustainable Living Celebration**

**Women’s Agricultural Network Course Helps Ag Entrepreneurs Plan for Success**
This fall, the University of Vermont Extension Women’s Agricultural Network will offer in-person and on-line sessions of Growing Places, a non-credit course for people interested in starting or expanding an agricultural business. The in-person course will start September 23 in Berlin. The on-line course will start the week of October 13.
Growing Places is open to anyone. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
The two fall 2008 course schedules are: Berlin on six Tuesday evenings beginning Sept. 23; and online beginning the week of October 13. Tuition is $125, but there is a $25 discount for people who register by the early bird deadline. The discount registration deadlines are: Aug. 29 for the Berlin class and September 23 for the Middelbury Class. The regular registration deadlines are September 12 for the Berlin class and Sept. 27 for the online class. Additionally, limited scholarship assistance is available to qualified individuals. A chance for Vermont food producers to meet one-on-one with buyers interested in sourcing local foods. The matchmaker event is a series of 10-minute conversations. Buyers will provide information on the types of products they’re looking for prior to the event, and sellers will sign up for meetings based on whose need they can match.
Optional morning workshops will cover topics of distribution, regulation, tracking local foods sales and pre-season planning. Home Energy Saving Workshops Available for Vermont Communities
Central Vermont Community Action Council (CVCAC), in partnership with the State of Vermont and the Vermont Energy and Climate Action Network (VECAN), will implement an intensive six-month public education program to mobilize Vermonters on how to save energy in their homes. Through a series of two-hour workshops around the state, citizens will learn about the fundamentals of how buildings lose energy and do-it-yourself opportunities for saving energy, including behavioral changes and low-cost weatherization measures.
