To the editor,
Vermont Secretary of Agriculture Steve Kerr’s “coexistence” language on the GMO issue as lauded by Governor Douglass inherently means it is OK for Vermont farms to be contaminated by genetic pollution weather they want it or not. Studies have proven time and again that there is no way to contain the spread of these genetically mutated organisms once they are released into the environment; no buffer big enough and no policy strong enough apart from zero-tolerance on GMOs in Vermont.
Coexistence equals contamination! GMOs are a living pollution. Through cross-pollination, GMO contamination can continue to reproduce itself in the environment until the whole of Vermont’s corn crops, and potentially hay and grass, are contaminated and therefore owned by Monsanto. The health, safety and integrity of all of Vermont’s agriculture belongs to Vermonters, and the purity that Vermont’s products invoke nationwide cannot be sacrificed to corporate interests.
Sincerely,
[your name and address]
