To the Editor:
Why is there a scarecrow in my front yard? Because I support strict liability in the Farmer Protection Act to protect ALL of Vermont’s family farmers from the liability associated with genetically engineered seeds. Corporations like Monsanto, DuPont, and Dow should be willing to stand behind their products, and our legislators should stand with Vermont’s family farmers. This is especially necessary because farmers who use genetically engineered seeds never own the seed – they are simply paying a “user fee” for the technology – the corporations retain ownership. The senate has overwhelmingly supported the bill (26-1), but some in the House want to weaken it. They’ll be voting on the issue in January, and I’ll be watching and expecting them to side with the farmers – NOT the corporations!
Sincerely,
