Town Resolution Against NAIS

Resolution calling upon legislators to stop the National Animal Identification System


WHEREAS, We the town of __________ affirm that food is essential for human survival. True food security lies in our freedom and ability to produce food for ourselves and our communities.

WHEREAS, We support and applaud any and all efforts to promote and invigorate a sustainable statewide system of fresh food production including meat, vegetables, dairy products, grains and all other foods that were available to Vermonters before the consolidation and industrialization of our nation’s food supply.

WHEREAS, We condemn any law, bureaucratic rule, or governmental policy that intentionally or unintentionally, inhibits or discourages individuals or small businesses from local food production.

WHEREAS, We believe that the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) that was conceived, and is being promoted by, an alliance of the nation’s largest meat packers and producers, manufacturers of digital micro chips, and many of our own government officials, among others, will discourage local food production threaten regional.

WHEREAS, The Vermont Agency of Agriculture has accepted federal funds for the adoption of, and is actively promoting, the first stage of the National Animal Identification System, by collecting information from Vermont citizens and sending it to the federal premises registration repository.

RESOLVED, We, the town of ________ oppose any government-run National Animal Identification System in all of its forms and call on our Vermont legislators, and our members of Congress to take the necessary steps to stop this program.
