BURLINGTON — A compost operation in the Burlington Intervale is going to close down later this year because it can't afford the required permits.
Kit Perkins of the Intervale Center, which oversees the compost operation, said the organization is a small nonprofit and can't afford to move forward.
In the last few months the composting operation has been beset with legal and regulatory challenges.
Perkins says the board of directors could revisit its decision if the regulatory situation changes.
A number of hospitals, colleges and senior housing centers send their food waste to the center.
Last year the center turned more than 18,000 pounds of organic waste into compost.
