We are looking for contributions of artwork from Vermont artists of all ages to use for our NEW Rural Vermont notecards. These notecards will be sold to raise funds to support Vermont family farms and to encourage policy makers to help us to achieve our vision of Food with Dignity. Get the family involved! Children’s artwork is highly encouraged.

Our vision for Food with Dignity is for a Vermont local food system which is self reliant and based on reverence for the earth. It builds living soils, which nurture animals and people with wholesome, natural products, supporting healthy, thriving farms and communities. These communities in turn work to encourage and support current and future farmers, continuing our Vermont heritage. This abundant and generous way of life celebrates our diversity and interdependence.

The Details:

--The art should reflect Rural Vermont’s vision statement (see above).

--All paintings, drawings, collages or photos should be no larger than 24” X 24”.

WASTE NOT-WANT NOT: GLEANING UP VERMONT
On November 1st at 5:30pm, Theresa Snow and Loona Brogan of the Vermont Foodbank Salavation Farms project will speak about the Vermont gleaning opportunities. Salvation Farms is a cost free resource available to farmers and food sites, providing volunteer crews for salvaging farm surplus and arranging storage and distribution of fresh food donations. If you are a farmer or a volunteer who can't abide waste, this program is for you. Learn how you can enhance the harvest and feed the people. Bountiful Harvest Potluck to follow. Free and open to the public.

NOFA-VT's Winter Feed and Feeding Clinics for Organic Dairy Producers
The Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont's Dairy and Livestock Technical Assistance Program has scheduled four regional Winter Feed and Feeding Clinics for organic dairy producers. These clinics will provide producers with an opportunity to review their feeding strategy and identify possible alternatives and improvements, find out about sources of purchased forages & grains and explore long-term feed production and feeding strategies. The clinics will be informal roundtable sessions where producers will have an opportunity to discuss winter feeding and "crunch the numbers" on their own stored feed inventories using worksheets provided by NOFA-VT.
The Winter Feed and Feeding Clinics will be held from 10am-Noon at the

*Tuesday, November 11 at the Small Business Development Center, Randolph Center
*Wednesday, November 12 at Taconic End Farm, Leicester
*Wednesday, December 3 at The Corse Farm, Whitingham (lunch and barn tour after the clinic)

VERMONT GROUNDWATER: Wed, Nov 12; 7 pm; U-32 High School, Gallison Hill Rd, Community Bldg (next to the track), East Montpelier. Larry Becker, State Geologist will give a power point presentation about groundwater: what it is, how it is located and what affects it. There will be a sample of a groundwater mapping of the Williston area. He'll answer questions about the East Montpelier proposal to bottle spring water.

Home Energy Saving Workshops Available for Vermont Communities
Central Vermont Community Action Council (CVCAC), in partnership with the State of Vermont and the Vermont Energy and Climate Action Network (VECAN), will implement an intensive six-month public education program to mobilize Vermonters on how to save energy in their homes. Through a series of two-hour workshops around the state, citizens will learn about the fundamentals of how buildings lose energy and do-it-yourself opportunities for saving energy, including behavioral changes and low-cost weatherization measures. NOFA-VT’s On-Farm Animal Processing Workshop Series

Flack Family Farm, Fairfield, VT

Join us for a two-day workshop at the Flack Family Farm. Carl Russell, of Earthwise Farm and Forest, will be leading the Friday slaughter workshop where he will review procedures, techniques, and infrastructure along with tool and food safety. Rural Vermont will join the conversation to address current on-farm slaughter regulation and policy. There will then be a slaughter demonstration with scalding and carcass prep. Saturday morning Cole Ward, Head Butcher at Sweet Clover Market, will lead the group through the breakdown of the whole carcass. He will go over primals and retail cuts, along with how to maximize quantity and quality of product. In the afternoon Aaron Josinsky, Executive Sous-Chef at the Inn at Shelburne Farms, will lead the group through techniques in further processing: making fresh sausage and pate, brining hams, smoking bacon, and curing salami. Pre-registration required. Please bring a lunch for Saturday. Cost: Friday: $20 for members, $30 for non-members; Saturday: $40 for members, $50 for non-members.

1-4pm Fair Winds Farm, Brattleboro, VT

Join us for a poultry processing workshop at Fair Winds Farm. Andy Rice of Hoggott Hill Farm will go over set-up, procedure, and safety of on-farm processing followed by a live step-by-step butchering demonstration of a variety of poultry including; chicken, turkey, duck, and goose. Rural Vermont will join the conversation to address current on-farm slaughter regulation and policy. Interested participants can be guided through the process using one of the farm’s chickens or can bring a bird of their own to process. Cost: $15 for members, $20 for non-members. Pre-registration required.

PRODUCER SURVEY: The Vermont Agency of Agriculture is conducting a general survey of processing needs for all farmers and food producers in the state. This survey should provide an overview of current gaps in our processing infrastructure, adding details to existing concerns and showing areas of need that may have been overlooked. It will act as a supplement to recent regional or product-based studies and a starting point for groups that want to do new research in a particular area.
