RURAL VERMONT MOVIE NIGHT ON THE FARM

RURAL VERMONT MOVIE NIGHT ON THE FARM:

A Film Screening of THE POWER OF COMMUNITY: HOW CUBA SURVIVED PEAK OIL

Ever wonder what it would really take to wean ourselves from fossil fuel? Or what a large-scale transition to local agriculture would look like? Join Rural Vermont and Milky Way Organic Farm for a free film screening of The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil.  Come out for a movie and farm fresh milk and cookies on Tuesday, December 9th from 6:30 - 8 pm at Milky Way Organic Farm in the Yoga Studio, 1486 Route 133, West Rutland. Don’t be shy. Everyone’s invited.

The Power of Community takes a close and timely look at how Cuba survived peak oil. The film begins with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990, which sent Cuba’s economy into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate to find a solution. The film explores the challenges, the community and the creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods and local, urban farms. This is a timely and unique look at Cuban culture during their economic crisis, a time called “The Special Period”. Cuba, which remains the only country to have ever faced such a crisis, provides a wonderful example of creativity, hope and opportunity during a time of overwhelming uncertainty in our world.

The film will be followed by a short presentation about Rural Vermont’s current work to support Vermont agriculture. This is a chance to get involved in supporting a locally based food economy and Vermont farmers.
