9/18 The LOCAL Foods Act Needs You Again!

Unfortunately, the LOCAL Foods Act wasn’t included in the recent Senate Farm Bill, which passed out of committee in September. As the Farm Bill moves to the Senate floor, we have a chance to get the LOCAL Foods Act added as an amendment. Please reach out to Senator Welch and Senator Sanders to show your support for on-farm processing in the Farm Bill. Urge them to include the LOCAL Foods Act (S.1212) and vote "yes" on a LOCAL Foods Act amendment!

The Livestock Owned by Communities to Advance Local (LOCAL) Foods Act (S.1212) is a straightforward, bipartisan bill that protects and expands access to on-farm livestock processing.

The bill updates the personal-use exemption in the Federal Meat Inspection Act to align with current USDA standards and clarifies that non-farmers can legally purchase a share of live animals and hire someone to process them on-farm as their agent. This protects the rights of livestock owners, producers, and itinerant slaughterers, and helps our local meat economies thrive. The LOCAL Foods Act will keep locally produced meat accessible and affordable, and help us build stronger, community-controlled food systems for years to come.
