Rural Vermont organizes, educates, and advocates in collaboration with local and global movements to strengthen the social, ecological, and economic health of the agrarian communities that connect us all.
Position Summary
Rural Vermont seeks a part-time community organizer to support existing staff with ongoing organizing, policy, and campaign initiatives related to scale-appropriate regulations and food sovereignty. This is a temporary position that is funded through December 31, 2026, with a possibility to become a permanent part-time position. From January-May, work may be more focused on Vermont legislative initiatives; from May-December, work will be more focused on grassroots organizing and base building, including development and implementation of member outreach strategies, meetings, organizing and attending outreach events, managing member survey processes, providing grant support, and working with allies.
Travel
At least bimonthly in-person meetings at the Rural Vermont office in Montpelier, semi-frequent occurrences at the Vermont Statehouse, and various in-person meetings around the state are required, including some evenings and weekends. Some work can be done remotely. Reliable transportation and the use of a personal computer and phone are required.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience with grassroots or community organizing and facilitation, with interest in building power among farmers and within rural communities.
Farming experience or close ties to the Vermont agricultural community.
Familiarity with Rural Vermont and alignment with our values and mission.
Outgoing personality, interpersonal skills, and ability to work with people from a variety of backgrounds.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to translate dense and complex content into plain language.
Experience or interest in working in a highly collaborative environment. Also self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
Strong proficiency with Google Suite, Microsoft products, and social media (Instagram, Facebook).
Excellent organizational skills with ability to manage diverse projects simultaneously.
Desirable Qualifications
Basic IT support (such as managing virtual events, cybersecurity, and troubleshooting tech issues)
Volunteer management
Grant writing experience
Graphic design experience
Experience creating basic audio/video communications
Understanding of, and/or experience with, policy and lawmaking processes in VT
Time Commitment: Approximately 15 hours/week.
Compensation: Beginning pay is in the $23-$25/hour range.
