BACKGROUND
The National Family Farm Coalition, Rural Vermont, the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance, and Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund are advocating for clarification and protection of longstanding on-farm slaughter practices. On-farm slaughter supports resilient local meat supply chains, gives producers the business security they need with more transparent regulations and consistent enforcement, and allows consumers to have more food choices.
With your help and support, the LOCAL Foods Act of 2025 is bipartisan and bicameral! S. 1212 was introduced in the Senate by Senators Peter Welch [D-VT], Bernie Sanders [I-VT], Mike Lee [R-UT], and Martin Heinrich [D-NM]. H.R. 5341 was introduced in the House by Representative Eugene Vindman [D-VA], and co-sponsored by James R. Baird [R-IN], Michael Cloud [R-TX], Lauren Boebert [R-CO], and Suhas Subramanyam [D-VA], and now Rep. Becca Balint [D-VT]. The Senate and House versions of the bill are identical.
Put simply, the LOCAL Foods Act will clarify and protect on-farm slaughter by making a simple change to the Federal Meat Inspection Act’s “personal-use exemption”.
