We understand that a healthy environment and clean water are essential to vitality of all living creatures, both human and non-human. We are also keenly aware that agriculture can be detrimental to the land and water, or an agent for healing. For this reason, we are vigilant in monitoring all pending environmental and water quality issues, and we are passionate in advocating for agricultural practices that improve the environment and the water we all depend on.
SUMMARY: The State of Vermont and the Legislature are continuing to debate how to establish a permanent funding source to support improvements and maintenance of water quality. Additionally, there are ongoing conflicts over interpretation of state and federal wetland regulations. Legislation is being considered to address these conflicts and to create clarity for the regulated community. Outside of the Statehouse, farmers continue to work diligently on their land, with one another, with agricultural organizations, and with environmental organizations to improve water quality and soil health.
UPDATE: Rural Vermont is monitoring the work of the Wetlands Study Committee which is made up of 2 members each from the House & Senate Ag and Natural Resources committees. The committee is holding 6 public meetings this fall both in Montpelier and in the field. The Committee’s goal is to develop a legislative proposal that will resolve numerous areas of conflict around state and federal wetlands regulations. Rural Vermont is a member of the Farm and Water Coalition, which met monthly over the summer and brought farmers, farming organizations, and environmental organizations together in order to grow trust, educate one another, find common paths forward, and recognize the link between farm viability & water quality.
